"Pius XII., Edith Stein und der Holocaust"
(Presence event)
The Vatican archives contain a letter in which Edith Stein asked the Pope to speak out against the attacks on Jews in Germany as early as 1933. How did the Holy See react to this? How did her murder in Auschwitz influence Pius XII? Did the Pope really react indifferently to the Holocaust? Or were there reasons for his supposed "silence"? German historian Michael Hesemann has been researching the Vatican archives since 2009. Since Pope Francis opened the files from the pontificate of World War II Pope Pius XII in 2020, many previously held prejudices have had to be revised.
Michael Hesemann studied history in Göttingen and works as a historian for the American Pave the Way Foundation, which promotes interreligious dialogue and reconciliation between Jews and Christians. He has had access to the Vatican archives since 2009. He has published 47 books, mostly on church and contemporary history topics, including "The Pope and the Holocaust" (2018), in which documents from the pontificate of Pius XII were published for the first time.
The lecture will take place at 6.30 pm in the lecture hall of the "Maria vom Frieden" monastery (Vor den Siebenburgen 6, 50676 Cologne).

"Edith Stein und der Karmel"
(Presence event)
Two important anniversaries are coming up this year: 14 October marks the 90th anniversary of Edith Stein's entry into the Carmelite convent in Cologne. 11 October marks the 25th anniversary of her canonization by Pope John Paul II. To mark this occasion, we would like to invite you to our short lectures on Edith Stein and Carmel.
The first lecture will take place on 11 October at 6 pm. Dr Monika Adamczyk-Enriquez (Edith Stein Archive in Cologne) will give a lecture on the topic: "Deer lange Weg in den Kölner Karmel - eine biografische Betrachtung" (The long way to the Carmel in Cologne - a biographical reflection). The lecture will describe Edith Stein's path to the Carmelite monastery in Cologne. The starting point is her encounter with the existence of objective truth through her master Edmund Husserl. This is followed by her first encounters with Christians, which had a lasting impact on her life, and her conversion to Christianity. The lecture will also deal with the difficulties that prevented her from entering a convent immediately after her conversion, and with the final events that sealed her long-cherished decision to become a nun.
The second lecture will take place on 12 October at 6 pm. Sister Prioress Mirjam Kiechle (OCD) will give a lecture on the topic "Geistliche Texte Edith Steins" (Spiritual Texts of Edith Stein). During her time in Cologne, Edith Stein particularly immersed herself in the history and spirituality of Carmel. In 1934, for example, she wrote a concise biography of St Theresa of Avila. She concluded it with the sentence: "In the great religious family that she founded, all those who have been given the immense grace of being called her sons and daughters look up to their holy mother with grateful love [...]". In her lecture, Sister Prioress Mirjam will explore this Carmelite spirit in the spiritual texts written by Sister Teresia Benedicta a Cruce in the Carmel of Cologne.
The third lecture will take place on 14 October at 4 pm. Dr Ulrich Dobhan (OCD) will give a lecture on the topic "Sr. Teresia Benedicta a Cruce im Kölner Karmel" (Sr Teresia Benedicta a Cruce in the Cologne Carmel). Archabbot Raphael Walzer commented on Edith Stein's entry into the Cologne Carmel: "Daily life together in a strictly cloistered order, a very cramped convent in the centre of the city among noisy lay people [...], seemed to me an all too daring undertaking, even for a heroically inclined soul like Edith Stein. I was completely wrong [...]. She felt completely at home, with heart and mind, she replied with her own vivacity of a fiery nature". When the 42-year-old philosopher entered the Carmelite convent in Cologne, she found the place to which she had always felt drawn. But everyday life in the convent, life in the community and with her superiors was not always easy.
The lectures will take place in the Teresia Chapel of the "Maria vom Frieden" monastery.

El mundo del pensamiento de
Edith Stein (parte II)
(online event)
After the success of our lecture series "The World of Edith Stein's Thought (Part I)" in Spanish last year, we would like to invite all those who understand Spanish to the second part of the series. On the one hand, we understand these events as a contribution to the research on Edith Stein in Spanish, which is currently prominent worldwide. On the other hand, we would like to pay tribute to our Spanish-speaking Facebook followers, who currently constitute the majority of our followers. Following the success of our lecture series "The World of Edith Stein's Thoughts (Part I)" in Spanish last year, we would like to invite all those who understand Spanish to the second part of the series. On the one hand, we see these events as a contribution to research on Edith Stein in Spanish, which is currently in the foreground worldwide. On the other hand, we would like to express our appreciation to our Spanish-speaking Facebook followers, who currently make up the majority of our followers.
Edith Stein, also known as St. Therese Benedicta a Cruce, was one of the most remarkable and complex personalities of the 20th century: philosopher, fighter for women's rights, educator, nun, Holocaust victim and, finally, saint of the Catholic Church. The years 2022-2023 will be filled with many important anniversaries connected with her. In 2022 we remember the 80th anniversary of her death and celebrate the centenary of her baptism and confirmation. In 2023 we celebrate, among other things, the 25th anniversary of her ordination as a saint of the Catholic Church and the 90th anniversary of her entry into the Carmelite Order in Cologne, where our archive is located.
For this reason we have started in 2022 a series of lectures on Edith Stein ""El mundo del pensamiento de Edith Stein (parte I)". This year we would like to invite you to the second part of our series with 5 lectures. Last year we focused on Stein's early work (Stein's phenomenology, philosophy of the body, the phenomenon of empathy), this semester we will focus on her philosophy in the Christian state and mysticism. However, this year we also want to devote some attention to Stein's early research. Our aim is a comprehensive study of Edith Stein's work. We therefore invite you to the first two lectures of our series, which is an excellent continuation and conclusion of the topics we dealt with in the first series, while at the same time opening up a space for reflection on Stein's philosophy of religion and mysticism. The first lecture by Dr. Ignacio Quepons Ramírez, entitled "Compasión y confianza: Dimensiones de la experiencia entre la empatía y la vulnerabilidad" (Compassion and trust: Dimensions of experience between empathy and vulnerability) will address the question of the role of sensitivity in the emergence of experiences such as trust and compassion. The second lecture by Dr. Inés Riego "El personalismo de Edith Stein. Una reflexión en clave mística" (The personalism of Edith Stein. A reflection in a mystical key) will examine Stein's personalist philosophy and will offer a very original approach to it from the perspective of Stein's life and, in particular, from the perspective of her search for the possibility of union with God. The third lecture by Dr. Stefano Santasilia, entitled "El fenómeno místico entre Edith Stein y Gerda Walter" (The Mystical Phenomenon between Edith Stein and Gerda Walter), will provide an insight into the two philosophers' analyses of the mystical phenomenon, its significance for their thinking and the similarities and differences in their approach. The fourth lecture by Dr. Rubén Sánchez Muñoz, entitled "La fenomenología de la religión de Edith Stein" (Edith Stein's phenomenology of religion), deals with Edith Stein's phenomenology of religion, the concept of which will be dissected on the basis of Stein's research into religious experience. The last lecture of the Dr. Juan Carlos Moreno Romo, entitled: "Edith Stein y 'nuestra filosofía'" (Edith Stein and 'our philosophy'), addresses the question of the "two philosophies". The full program and the official poster of the event can be found here:

Book presentation „Von Breslau nach Jerusalem.
Channah Erika Tworoger – Edith Steins Nichte“
(Presence event)
The book is a new publication of the Edith Stein House in Wroclaw, which was published to accompany the new exhibition of the house „Von Breslau nach Jerusalem..." (From Breslau to Jerusalem...). The book tells the exciting life story of Erika Tworoger (later Channah Erika Cohen). Erika was the daughter of Elfriede Tworoger (née Stein), the older sister of Edith Stein. After her parents divorced, Erika and her mother lived for several years in the house of her grandmother, Augusta Steins, on Michaelisstraße in Breslau. The escalating hatred of Jews and ultimately the events of Kristallnacht forced Erika and her mother, like the rest of the Stein family, to look for a way to emigrate from Germany. After many attempts, Erika was granted a visa to enter Jerusalem, but she was the only one to receive the visa...
The catalogue contains an incredible wealth of exciting details from the life of Erika and her mother before, during and after the war years, as well as Erika's life in Jerusalem. It is also a "trilingual" catalogue (Polish, English, German) with 347 pages and over 100 illustrations. Both the exhibition and the catalogue were created on the basis of archive material that Erika's son Shlomo Kovalski made available to the Edith Stein House in Wroclaw.
On 5 August at 6.30 pm, Dr Anna Siemieniec, curator of the exhibition and co-editor of the book „Von Breslau nach Jerusalem. Channah Erika Tworoger – Edith Steins Nichte“ The event will be moderated by Dr Monika Adamczyk-Enriquez (Edith Stein Archive in Cologne) and simultaneously translated from Polish to German. The event will take place in the Theresienkapelle of the church "Maria vom Frieden" (Vor den Siebenburgen 6, Cologne).
